BACC Membership Lunch Meeting

MEMPHIS ALLIES
Reducing Gun Violence in Memphis
A Youth Villages Initiative

Memphis Allies is a gun violence reduction initiative launched by Youth Villages. The project is bringing together community groups and resources to create safer neighborhoods where families and businesses can thrive, and children can grow up to reach their full potential as adults.

In partnership with other Ally organizations, Youth Villages provides services to young people and adults at the highest risk of involvement with deadly violence.

Says Carl Davis Jr., initiative director of operations: “What we base our model on is three things: to identify, connect and serve." The goal of the project is to draw young people away from a culture of violence.

Speakers at the luncheon will be Shelby County Commissioner Mick Wright and Susan Deason, Executive Director, Memphis Allies. They will be discussing more specifics of the program and how the community can assist.

Susan Deason has worked at Youth Villages for 26 years. She earned her BA in psychology from Rhodes College and her MA in counseling from The University of Memphis. She's led the development of several new programs at Youth Villages during her tenure, including a Juvenile Court-funded prevention program and the Transitional Living program now known as LifeSet™.

Mick Wright has also worked for Youth Villages. Since 2003 he's held the role of Government Relations Manager for the organization's Memphis Allies initiative. He also serves on the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, representing District 3, which includes Bartlett and Lakeland. He holds a BA in English from Harding University and an MA in public administration from Strayer University.
